Karen Schwartz Resume (PDF) Karen Schwartz is an Atlanta artist represented by StudioSwan at Serenbe in Palmetto Georgia. She has shown work in juried group and solo exhibitions, had portraits placed in private and corporate collections, and done portraits and landscapes for commission. Karen's mixed media portraits on paper and canvas of personally known and cultural figures are up close character studies that create psychological impact with a distinctive use of line and color. Her experience as a clinical psychologist practicing psychotherapy for over 20 years informs an enduring passion and respect for personal idiosyncrasy that animates Karen's portrait work. Her trust in what "eyes and hand will tell you about my subjects" embodies a risk that pays off in works of honesty and boldness. The best thing anyone has ever said about her portrait work is, "You paint people's insides." Karen experiences portrait making and doing psychotherapy to be allied endeavors and enjoys articulating their parallel aspects. Both involve an empathic sensing into the being of another person with the aim of constructing, through visual means or conversation, an essential rendering of their personhood and humanness. Portraits and psychotherapeutic dialogue are products of collaboration between self and other.
